Activation Report

The parking spot for the start of this walk is in a disused quarry, at the end of a single track road at SH5505 5989. The carpark is only small, and I can imagine that it would fill up very quickly during busy periods.

I started my walk at 10am, following the track east. After about 700m I turned south (right), to begin the climb to the summit. The path is well defined and straightforward all the way up. It took me an hour to reach the summit, the weather was fine with good views, if not a little hazy. This summit can afford great views of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), although today unfortunately, its summit was covered with cloud.

I setup my station a few metres away from the summit shelter. I started on 2m ,using the IC705, with a flowerpot antenna mounted on the carbon 6 pole. This yielded 3 contacts in about 20 minutes, including Northern Ireland. Don, GW0PLP, had tipped me off about someone operating 70cm on Red Screes, in the Lake District, but unfortunately I couldn’t hear them.

I packed away the carbon 6 pole, and setup for HF using the 20m 1/4 wave telescopic whip. There was some QSB on 20m but I soon had a further 18 contacts in the log. Total QSO count was 21.

After packing away, I took some time to enjoy the views before retracing my route back to the carpark.
